PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hold type display device whose animation display performance can be improved without lowering display luminance, shortening the life of a back light, or increasing power consumption. SOLUTION: The hold type display device which irradiates a hold type display panel 1 where the animation is displayed with irradiation light from the back light 2 is provided with a light direction switching means 3 of switching the direction of transmitted light between two directions, e.g. to the right or left for one or more cycles in one field when the irradiation light from the back light 2 is transmitted.
