PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an operator to early and easily discover looseness of a lock nut and elongate deformation of a rod, with regard to a cylinder device and a method for detecting looseness of the lock nut and elongate deformation of the rod. SOLUTION: This cylinder device is provided with a hollow cylindrical cylinder tube 1; a piston rod 2 inserted into the cylinder tube 1 along the axial direction; a diameter reduction part 3 formed in one end part of the piston rod 2 while having a step 9 with respect to the outer peripheral face so as to reduce the diameter; a piston 4 brought into sliding contact with the inner peripheral face of the cylinder tube 1, annularly fitted to the outer peripheral face of the diameter reduction part 3 so as to be slidable in the axial direction, and partitioning inside of the cylinder tube 1 into a rod chamber 12 and a head chamber 11; a passage 27 connecting the rod chamber 12 with the head chamber 11; and the lock nut 5 fastened to the one end part of the piston rod 2, abutting on the piston 4, axially sandwiching and fixing the piston 4 between the lock nut 5 and the step 9 and leaking working fluid to the passage 27 when loosed.
