PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine, in particular a compression ignition engine, having a variable valve train system and a multistage fuel injection system, preventing operation of the variable valve train and operation of the fuel injection from interfering with each other and improving engine performance. SOLUTION: Intake valve closing timing is controlled according to an engine operation state and timing of secondary injection before primary injection is relatedly controlled accordingly.
