In a refuse bin 10 provided with a lifting handle in the form of a bail 18, having parallel side limbs 19 pivoted at diametrically opposite points of the bin, and a lid 15 slidably secured to the side limbs, the axis about which the bail can pivot is positioned at slightly more than half the diameter of the lid from the open end of the bin so that the lid in its open position will not project above the top of the bin. The handle 16 of the lid is a trough in which the bail rests when the lid is raised and guide members 24, for replacement of the lid, are formed by pressed metal sheets secured to the sides of the bin. The limbs 19 are threaded through loops 17 and 23 formed by bent over tangs of plates secured to the sides of the lid and of the bin and bars to assist in emptying the bin are secured beneath the recessed base 11. In modifications the guides are replaced by a noise-reducing ring of fibre-glass of tapered section and of identifying colour, and the lid, bail and loops 17 and 23 are plastic-coated.</p> |
