PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating salt water, capable of setting the set values of the waveform parameters of the current passing through the salt water at an easily controllable level and of stabilizing the available chlorine concentration when some fluctuation of the current through the salt water takes place, in order to sterilize the salt water and to keep a low concentration of available chlorine. SOLUTION: The method sterilizes the salt water by the current passing therethrough wherein the prescribed voltage or current A is shifted from the steady state in the plus direction, kept for time T1, and returned to the original steady state, and wherein, after maintaining the steady state for the prescribed time T2, the prescribed voltage or the current A is shifted from the steady state in the minus direction, kept for time T1, and returned to the original state to be allowed to maintain this state for prescribed time T2, such waveform thus being repeated thereafter. Thereby the sterilized water is produced having such a low concentration of the available chlorine that the material to be cleaned is not affected, and, moreover, the set values of the waveform parameters can be set at an easier level for control than the set values of the conventional waveform parameters.
