A pour spout fitment applicator (22) for applying pout spout fitments to a series of cartons (8) advancing on a packaging machine, comprises at least one anvil (24) used in attaching the fitments to the cartons (8), a bearing arrangement (28) mounting the anvil(s) (24) for reciprocation towards and away from the series of cartons (8), a linear drive device including at least one linear servomotor (26) and arranged to reciprocate the or each anvil (24) along an axis and, at a forward end of the reciprocatory stroke of the anvil (24), to cause the anvil (24) to participate in producing a force employed in attaching a fitment to a carton (8), and a PLC42 in communication with the drive device(s) for controlling the drive device(s), the PLC42 serving to determine the power output of the or each drive device and to limit that power output to a desired value, thereby to limit the value of the employed force.
