PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photocatalyst which is conveniently synthesized, is capable of stably containing active oxygen and can continue catalytic activity by photo-irradiation. SOLUTION: The photocatalyst uses an oxyapatite consisting of M1<SB>a</SB>M2<SB>b</SB>(M3O<SB>4</SB>)<SB>6</SB>XY, wherein: M1 represents at least one kind of element of Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, Sn, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ru, Pb, Cd and Ag; M2 represents at least one kind of element of Sc, Y, La, Sb, Bi, Eu, Nd, Al, Ga and In; M3 represents at least one kind of P, Si, Mn, As, Cr, V, Ge, B, W and Mo; a, b satisfy the relations of a+b=1.0 and 0.1≤b≤2.0; X represents at least one active oxygen of O<SP>-</SP>, O<SB>2</SB><SP>-</SP>and O<SB>3</SB><SP>-</SP>; Y is an active oxygen other than X for compensating charges of oxyapatite and is represented by, for example, O<SP>2-</SP>, wherein Y may be dispensed when the charges of oxyapatite are compensated only by X.
