PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten first-time printing time and to prevent unnecessary scraping of a photoreceptor drum even if a charging roller is soiled in the use of a simple, low-cost power source circuit and to reduce the adverse effect of the soil on an image. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a charging voltage output means capable of outputting AC voltages of different levels in inter-peak voltage to the charging means. Based on a difference between the minimum value and average value of the values of currents flowing in an electrostatic latent image, it is determined whether to perform a level alteration checking operation for the inter-peak voltage of the AC voltage applied to the charging means during an image forming operation.
