PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a scanning optical apparatus in which stable optical performance is obtained even when the characteristics of a surface emitting type laser light source vary due to an increase in driving current and to obtain an image forming apparatus using the scanning optical apparatus. SOLUTION: The scanning optical apparatus includes: a conversion optical system which converts a luminous flux emitted from a light source means into a luminous flux in another state; a deflecting means which deflects and scans the luminous flux; and a focusing optical system which introduces the deflected luminous flux onto a face to be scanned. The light source means is the surface emitting type laser light source having a plurality of light emitting points and satisfies the conditions, 3≤Fnos<Fnom≤15 and dθs/dT<dθm/dT, or 3≤Fnom<Fnos≤15 and dθm/dT<dθs/dT, where Fnom and Fnos stand for the F-number in the main scanning direction and the F-number in the subscanning direction on the light source means side of the transforming optical system, respectively,θm andθs stand for the half-value angle of the far field pattern in the main scanning direction of the luminous flux emitted from the light source means and the half-value angle in the subscanning direction, respectively, dθm/dT and dθs/dT stand for the variations in the half-value anglesθm andθs of the far field pattern when environment temperature varies by dT, respectively.
