PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing a secondary transfer defect at a secondary transfer unit. SOLUTION: Primary transfer units 60Y, 60M, 60C, and 60K transfer images from respective photoreceptors 20Y, 20M, 20C, and 20K onto an intermediate transfer belt 70 in sequence. Counter electrodes 10 are provided on both surfaces of the belt between the primary transfer unit 60K and secondary transfer unit 80. Toner particles forming an image on the intermediate transfer belt 70 are applied with electric fields from the counter electrodes 10 to be peeled off a surface of the intermediate transfer belt 70 and affected by a gravitational force because of the difference in density between toner particles and carrier liquid, so that position replacement between the toner particles and carrier liquid is carried out. Consequently, the secondary transfer defect at the secondary transfer unit 80 can be prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
