摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a moving picture coding method and apparatus capable of highly efficiently coding a moving picture such as a fade picture and a dissolve picture whose luminance temporally changes. <P>SOLUTION: The picture coding apparatus includes a frame memory/prediction image generating unit 108 having: a first prediction mode wherein one combination is selected among a plurality of combinations of reference image numbers and prediction parameters and a prediction image signal 212 is generated; and a second prediction mode wherein a prediction image signal is generated according to prediction parameters calculated on the basis of the reference image numbers and inter-image distances of a plurality of reference images, and a variable length coder 111 selects any prediction mode depending on the reference image number, and codes orthogonal conversion coefficient information 210 associated with a prediction error signal of the prediction image signal 212 with respect to an input moving picture signal 100, mode information 213 denoting a coding mode, motion vector information 214, and index information 215 denoting a combination of the selected reference image number and the prediction parameters. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
