<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight lighting device wherein a space between CFLs can be widened without causing uneven luminance at its end, and effect of center luminance and effect of reducing the number of CFLs are materialized, and to provide an image display apparatus using it. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight lighting device has a plurality of cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CFL) and a diffusion reflector in its lower part, and each CFL is disposed so that the space between the CFLs is narrow at the center part and wide at the end.
