PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal member which has a hat-shaped cross section and is bent in the longitudinal direction used for a part for an automobile, and a designing method for the member. SOLUTION: The hat-shaped metal member excellent in a shape freezing property is provided with a gradually changing part where either height or width or both change in the longitudinal direction of the metal member which has the hat-shaped cross section and is bent in the longitudinal direction such as a roof side rail outer of an automobile. Torsion amount after forming of the metal member is suppressed to be approximate 5 mm or less, namely, one third or less of the conventional value, by making the distance L (mm) from the minimum part of the curvature radius in the longitudinal direction to the member end part, and the distance P (mm) from the starting end of the gradually changing part to the member end part be the area shown in Fig. 1.
