PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmitter comprising a function for detecting operational abnormality of an optical modulator and keeping right the output of a light source.

SOLUTION: The optical transmitter 100 comprises: an LD unit 120 for outputting output light of a light source; an LN unit 110 which modulates signal light in accordance with an electric signal inputted from an RF unit 151 and outputs the signal light; a PD 124 for detecting an output the output light of the light source outputted from the LD unit 120; a PD 113 for detecting an output of signal light outputted from the LN unit 110; a mark rate determination unit 130 for determining an operating state of the LN unit 110 using the output of the signal light detected by the PD 124 and the output of the signal light detected by the PD 113; and an ALC unit 140 for controlling the output of the output light of the light source outputted from the LD unit 120 in accordance with a determination result of the mark rate determination unit 130.
