PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrict the deterioration of coolant temperature estimating accuracy due to fuel cutting operation to the minimum in a system for renewing an estimated coolant temperature value in response to operating condition during operation of an engine. SOLUTION: During execution of fuel cutting operation, operation is changed to a map MAP4 for fuel cutting, and a coolant temperature rise componentΔTup during execution of the fuel cutting operation is computed in response to engine operation parameter (engine seed Ne) related to the air compression heat generated inside cylinders of the engine during execution of the fuel cutting operation, and rising characteristic of the estimated coolant temperature value Te during execution of the fuel cutting operation can be adjusted to rising characteristic of the real coolant temperature similarly with the said execution mode 2, and coolant temperature estimating accuracy during execution of the fuel cutting operation can be thereby improved.
