PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic light emitting device for producing an optical output that is high in both stability and brightness with high efficiency even if a light emitting layer having a wide energy gap is used. SOLUTION: The light emitting layer is composed of a first light emitting layer, and a second light emitting layer that is positioned keeping in contact with the first light emitting layer at a cathode side. The first light emitting layer contains at least a first compound as a main component, and the second light emitting layer contains at least a second compound as a main component, HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) energy of the first compound is shallower than that of the second compound, LUMO (lowest unoccupied orbital) energy of the first compound is shallower than that of the second compound, and the organic light emitting element is equipped with a recombination region that is located in these two light emitting layers at the center on the interface between them.
