PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization converter capable of more enhancing the efficiency using light from a light source. SOLUTION: The polarization converter is provided with: a wire grid polarization separating part 1 consisting of a wire grid polarization separating element 1a which transmits p-polarized light and reflects s-polarized light and a wire grid polarization separating element 1b which reflects p-polarized light and transmits s-polarized light, with respect to p-polarized light and s-polarized light included in light radiated from the light source 100; a reflection mirror 2 which reflects the p-polarized light and the s-polarized light reflected on the wire grid polarization separating part 1 to the direction of the wire grid polarization separating part 1; and a 1/2 wavelength plate 4 which allows the polarization direction of the p-polarized light transmitted by the wire grid polarization separating part 1 to nearly coincide with that of the s-polarized light, wherein the wire grid polarization separating part 1 is formed so as to have a size almost equal to or more than the size of the reflection mirror 2 in order to perform polarization separation of almost the whole light from the light source 100.
