PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system capable of detecting a target material highly accurately by a simple optical means based on a structural color change. SOLUTION: This detection method uses a substrate 10; and a structural color evaluation device 20 equipped with a receptor 2 bondable specifically to the target material 1, an additional material 6 bonded to the receptor, which is the additional material for heightening the degree of the structural color change, and a capturing material 3 immobilized on the substrate in the bonded state to the receptor, which is the capturing material having a property capable of liberating the receptor in a prescribed condition wherein the target material exists. The device and a sample are incubated in the condition wherein the receptor and the additional material can be liberated from the device in accordance with existence of the target material in the sample, and the degree of the structural color change based on liberation of the receptor is optically examined.
