In a single-zone sag adjusting roller for a paper or cardboard producing or finishing machine, with a fixed cross-head on which a roller casing is rotatably mounted and supported via hydrostatic supporting elements, the roller casing is of flexible material, eliminating the effects of mounting zones and front sides on the linear force acting on the nip. In a single-zone sag adjusting roller for a paper or cardboard producing or finishing machine, forming a nip with a counter-roller and having a fixed cross-head on which a roller casing is rotatably mounted and supported via hydrostatic supporting elements, the roller casing is of flexible material, eliminating the effects of mounting zones and front sides on the linear force acting on the nip. The supporting elements are subjected to identical loading pressures, and the loadings on supporting elements located in the edge region of the sheet to treated are separately controllable. Independent claims are included for: (1) a calender with at least one sag-adjusting roller as above, with a counter-roller selected from thermo-rollers, single- or multi-zone sag adjusting rollers, hollow rollers and floating sag-adjusting rollers; and (2) a method for sub-controlling the edge region in the nip of a calender, involving use of a sag adjusting roller as above, in combination with a counter-roller selected from thermo-rollers and sag adjusting rollers.
