PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To divide data on the basis of a prescribed parameter and to manage files and directories for the respective divided data when recording the data continuously inputted from external equipment. SOLUTION: The recording and reproducing device having a storage means for storing sound data and a reproducing means for reproducing the sound data stored in the storage means, comprises a sound data acquisition means for inputting the sound data from the external equipment, a time length data division means for dividing the sound data by a prescribed time length and/or a silent part data division means for dividing the data when a prescribed sound level is not detected from the sound data for fixed time, and a storage control means for generating the files for the respective divided sound data and storing the files in the directory and storing it in the storage means when the prescribed number of files are generated.
