PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compressor, preventing liquid compression caused by suction of foam when a large amount of liquid refrigerant or oil flows from an external cooling circuit or a foaming phenomenon occurs, and having high reliability because the liquid compression is prevented. SOLUTION: A wall face defining a muffling space 160 is provided with a relief valve 170 at a position on an extension line on the other end 164 side of a tail pipe 166. Therefore, even if a large amount of liquid refrigerant or oil 103 from an intake pipe 102 is sucked into a suction muffler 140 through the tail pipe 166, the relief valve 170 positioned on the extension line on the other end 164 side of the tail pipe 166 is push-opened by an inertial force of the relief valve 170, so that the liquid refrigerant or oil is discharged out of the muffling space 160. The liquid refrigerant or oil 103 flowing into the muffling space 160 once does not flow into a cylinder 124 to prevent the liquid compression.
