Balancing.-For stabilizing ar aircraft about a longitudinal axis a gyroscope having a spinning axis 2 normally parallel to the transverse axis of the machine is mounted to process about a vertical axis 6, the casing being provided with a weight 4 set eccentrically to this axis so as tc exert a turning moment on the casing when the machine is tilted, this turning moment being opposed by the precessional moment. as the machine rights itself under servo-motor control, the angular velocity, and therefore the precessional moment diminishing as the angle of displacement decreases. The servo motor comprises a continuously running motor which is coupled to a shaft 13 for actuating the ailerons in the appropriate direction by reversing gear controlled by contacts 8, 9 co-operating with a contact carried by a lever 7 on the gyroscope casing. A spring 16 acting on a lever 18 normally maintains the spinning axis in its transverse position. |
