<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for ameliorating eyestrains which are not treated by an ordinary means and require a time for recovery. <P>SOLUTION: A food material for controlling eyestrains is evaluated by using an index in which in culture of cornea epithelial cells that are not neither cancerous nor immortal, the cornea epithelial cells are irradiated with an ultraviolet light so as not to perish, whether possibility of existence of cells in the culture in the presence of a substance to be examined is higher or not than in the culture in the absence of a substance to be examined is judged, when the possibility is higher, the substance is judged to be suitable as a food material for controlling eyestrains, when the possibility is lower, the substance is judged not to be suitable as a food material for controlling eyestrains. The food material suitable for the evaluation method is an extract of a part or the whole of a plant selected from Morus alba of Moraceae, Cassia mimosoides L. var. nomame of Leguminosae, chrysanthemum of Compositae, safflower of Compositae, Lycium chinense Miller of Solanaceae and Lonicera caerulea L. of Caprifoliaceae or a substance obtained by removing the solvent and is evaluated as a food material suitable for the evaluation method. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
