<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interface consistent with a user regardless of whether an application is currently active or not. <P>SOLUTION: In a drop-down menu, upon displaying a menu item, it is determined whether a command for changing a document is active or not, and a menu item object is stored in a storing means. In response to the change of the document, a notification is generated. A means for determining whether the command is active or not is queried, and a display variable is updated based on whether the command is active or not.
