PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal apparatus wherein reduction in display quality caused by thickness unevenness of an alignment layer can be suppressed and reduction in display quality caused by an alignment defect of a liquid crystal can be also suppressed.

SOLUTION: An insulating film 115 provided with recessed parts in transmission display regions is provided on an inner surface of at least one substrate 110 of a pair of substrates of the liquid crystal apparatus 100 and the liquid crystal in the transmission display regions Gt is formed to be thicker than the liquid crystal in an reflection region Gr by the recessed parts. First recessed grooves 115g1 extended in a first direction and connecting the adjacent transmission display regions Gt in the first direction and second recessed grooves 115g2 extended in a second direction crossing the first direction and connecting the adjacent transmission display regions Gt in the second direction are provided in the insulating film and both the first recessed grooves and the second recessed grooves are disposed in a region except a boundary of adjacent sub pixels G.
