Food such as bread, meat or fried food is placed on a conveyer under a translucent cover and transported. During transport, the food is exposed to infrared radiation and heated prior to consumption. Alternatively, the heat modifies the shape of the translucent cover which becomes part of the packaging. The translucent cover is a plastics (9) polyimide foil which is capable of withstanding temperatures of between 250 and 500 degrees C. The foil is between 20 and 2000 mu thick.
