PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarized beam splitter which does not recognize moires when transmitted light is observed, and to provide a back light unit. SOLUTION: The polarized beam splitter is equipped with first and second optical plate members 12, 13 which have inflection faces 12A, 13A formed alternately with crest parts and trough parts in parallel to each other on the surfaces on one side and have planes on the surfaces on the other and allow the transmission of P polarized light more than S polarized light. The respective inflection faces 12A, 13A of the first and the second optical plate members 12, 13 are arranged to face each other via an air layer 11 in such a manner that the ridge lines of the crest parts are made parallel to each other. The first and second optical plate members 12, 13 are made incapable of identifying the moires by varying the pitch of the crest parts on one side of the first and the second optical plate members 12, 13 from the pitch of the crest pasts on the other side.
