Sealing off a suction zone in a suction roll comprises sealing a first zone from a second zone by pressing a stationary seal against the roller shell (2) with a pressure device (12) that exerts a high pressure during evacuation of the first zone and exerts a lower pressure after a predetermined vacuum has been attained. An independent claim is also included for a suction roll control device for controlling the pressure exerted by a pressure device as above.
