PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact high-performance zoom lens whose angle of view in a wide angle end state exceeds 75°, and which has such a high variable power that a variable power ratio is≥about 4 and is suitable for a digital still camera or the like. SOLUTION: The zoom lens is constituted of: a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power; a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power; a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power; a fourth lens group G4 having negative refractive power; and a fifth lens group G5 having positive refractive power in order from an object side. When a focal distance is changed from the wide angle end state W to a telephoto end state T, the first to the fifth lens groups move respectively. The fourth lens group is constituted of: a positive lens component whose lens surface nearest to an image side is convex to the image side, and a negative lens component whose lens surface nearest to the image side is concave to the image side in order from the object side.
