PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an upright variable power afocal optical system which uses variable focal distance elements, that are less in optical performance deterioration due to change with time, and is simple in a configuration. SOLUTION: The upright variable power afocal optical system includes a first lens group G1 having the first variable focal distance element L1V, and a second lens group G2 having the second variable focal distance element L2V. The first variable focal distance element L1V varies a focal distance by changing the shape of the face of a boundary formed between a first liquid material and a second liquid material different from the first liquid material in a refractive index and unmixable with the first liquid material. The second variable focal distance element L2V varies the focal distance by changing the shape of the face of a boundary formed between a third liquid material and a fourth liquid material different from the third liquid material in a refractive index and unmixable with the fourth liquid material.
