PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce unnecessary initial cleaning. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes, for example, a transfer body, a density sensor for detecting the density level of an image on the transfer body, and a density control means for controlling the density in accordance with the density level of a test image formed on the transfer member. The image forming apparatus includes a cleaning means for cleaning the transfer body, and the cleaning means is operated when the state of the transfer body is not suitable for forming the test image.
