PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which uses a liquid crystal material having spontaneous polarization property, the liquid crystal display device being capable of high-contrast display over a wide temperature range with small disclination and zigzag alignment defect occurrence. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a pair of substrates 12 and 13 where electrodes 26 for liquid crystal driving are formed on at least the one substrate 12 and also has the liquid crystal material 14 with the spontaneous polarization property 43 charged between the substrates 12 and 13. Liquid crystal molecules 41 of the liquid crystal material are optically and isotropically aligned when no voltage is applied to the electrodes 26 for liquid crystal driving and optically and uniaxially aligned when a voltage is applied to the electrodes 26 for the liquid crystal driving; and the axial direction of the uniaxial alignment continuously rotates according to the level of the voltage and the rotating direction differs with the polarities of the voltage.
