PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for oil separation capable of efficiently separating an oil content out of oil-containing waste water and capable of judging the degradation of oil adsorption ability of an oil adsorbing material by the appearance. SOLUTION: The oil separator 1 is provided with: a water storage tank 2 for storing oil-containing waste water; porous ceramic 9 having such a property as to float on water when adsorbing no oil, but sink under water when adsorbing oil; and a recovery means 7 for recovering the porous ceramic which adsorbs the oil content while floating on the oil-containing water stored in the water storage tank 2 and then sinks under water.
