PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-capacity cylindrical alkaline storage battery which has high productivity and high quality and moreover is excellent in rapid charging and discharging characteristics. SOLUTION: The cylindrical alkaline storage battery is provided with an electrode group composed of a winding of a cathode plate 24, an anode plate and a separator in a conductive cylindrical outer can. If a maximum diameter of the outer can is Dmax and the number of windings of the cathode plate 24 is N, a relation shown in a formula of N≥[0.5×Dmax-2.65] ([ ] are Gaussian symbols) is satisfied. For example, in a AA battery, the number of windings N is 4 or more. In a cross-sectional view of the electrode group and if a circumferential position of a winding-start end part 36 of the cathode plate 24 is taken as a base position, an angleθmeasured alongside the cathode plate 24 from a circumferential position of a winding-end part 40 of the cathode plate 24 to the above base position is within a range of 180°or larger and 270°or smaller.
