PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device using vertical alignment type liquid crystal molecules capable of obtaining high contrast even with respect to a light obliquely made incident. SOLUTION: In the vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device having a pair of substrates having electrodes on their opposing surfaces and a liquid crystal layer containing the vertical alignment type liquid crystal molecules held between the pair of the substrates, pretilt directions of the liquid crystal molecules are twisted between the pair of substrates by deviating their alignment axes defined by alignment layers of the respective substrate surfaces from each other.
