The method involves detecting operating data (D) of a turbo charger, and determining a parameter for a state of the turbo charger based on the data. The turbo charger is monitored continuously based on the parameter and an anticipated malfunction of the turbo charger is determined based on the parameter. The turbo charger of a motor vehicle is controlled, and a momentary load of the turbo charger is reduced or limited. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for monitoring a turbo charger of a motor vehicle.
