<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paste-based glass ionomer cement composition for dentistry, which has the same operability as those of conventional glass ionomer cement for dentistry, has high mechanical strength, especially compression strength, is a two paste system, and is excellent in operability. <P>SOLUTION: This paste-based glass ionomer cement composition for dentistry comprises a first paste and a second paste compounded with a prescribed amount of fluoroaluminosilicate glass powder. The first paste comprises a prescribed amount of an α-βunsaturated carboxylic acid polymer, a prescribed amount of a filler not reacting with the α-βunsaturated carboxylic acid polymer and not dispersed in water in a monodisperse state, a prescribed amount of water, and a silica aqueous sol containing colloidal silica having an average particle diameter of 1 to 100 nm in water in an SiO<SB>2</SB>concentration of 1 to 50 wt.% in a prescribed amount as the amount of colloidal silica.
