Filter cartridge for a potable water filter unit has top inlet and bottom outlet connections, is internally divided by a, preferably cylindrical, depending wall baffle (5) into 'inlet' and 'outlet' regions. The bottom outlet connects solely with a down-comer pipe (7) which only has opening to the cartridge at the top of the 'outlet section'. Cartridge may contain activated carbon or ion exchange resin.
