The invention relates to login control for peripheral devices having multiple applications, at least some of which require an operator to login, for example, a peripheral with printer, scanner and photocopier applications each having login requirements. One of the applications is defined as a master application and all other applications are defined as slave applications. The master application obtains login information 112 from an operator, e.g. a user name and password, and slave applications are able to seek login details from the master application 142. Preferably the master application creates a login context object containing the login information which is then sent to a slave application requesting login details. Consequently the operator is able to login to slave applications without having to re-enter login details. If login information is not available for a particular slave application, the slave application obtains login information under control of the master application by executing a slave login algorithm 120. The application designated as master may be predetermined, or it may be the first suitable application requesting mastery of the system 138.
