293,957. Joseph, R. June 10, 1927. Hoods.-Relates to sliding hoods, and particularly to sliding roofs for saloon vehicles. A flexible roof is provided mounted on a spring roller tensioned normally to wind the roof on to the roller and the side edges of the flexible roof are adapted to be secured by a slider fastener of the type described in Specifications 12261/15 and 114,629, [both in Class 44. Fastenings, Lock &c.], to the longitudinal edges of a flexible strip attached to the vehicle sides. The flexible roof 1 is mounted on a concave roller 8 and passes over a convex guide roller 7 the front edge of the roof being secured to a carrier bar 5. An endless chain 21 is mounted on each side of the vehicle on sprockets 14, 15. Fig. 6, and motion by means of a handle 9 and shaft 12 Fig. 1 in one direction is adapted when closing the roof to advance the roof and then to operate the slider fastener. Assuming the roof is closed it is opened by operating the chain so that its upper reach moves forwardly causng the slider carrier to move forwardly to unfasten the edges of the roof by means of a traveller 24 engaging in a concave recess 25 in the slider carrier. At the forward end the traveller leaves the recess which is concentric with the front sprocket and the traveller on continued motion enters a similar recess on the roof bar carrier 30 which is connected to the roof bar 5 by a bracket 33 and carries the roof to the rear where it is wound on the roller 8. In a modification a carrier may be mounted to slide betwen the upper and lower reaches of the chain the carrier being provided with pins which project through the chain and engage appropriately the slider and roof carriers. Roof supporting bars 6 are carried to their appropriate positions and retracted therefrom by means of a carrier 38 Fig. 8 which is moved along the guides 19 on which the roof bar 5 slides. The carrier 38 is adapted to be depressed against spring pressure by cams 51 on the slide 19 so that on moving forward the carrier 38 leaves one of the bars 6 at each appropriate position and collects them on retracting the roof. |
