Germanium solar cell and method for the production thereof

The present invention is related to a method for passivating and contacting a surface of a germanium substrate, comprising:
a providing a germanium substrate having a first surface;
b. forming a passivation layer of an amorphous silicon material on the first surface;
c. forming a contact layer on the passivation layer, wherein the contact layer comprises a first metal layer, the first metal layer comprising at least one of palladium, copper and aluminium; and
d. heating the substrate and the layers so that the first surface makes contact with the contact layer through the passivation layer. It moreover relates to passivated germanium substrates and photovoltaic devices produced by such methods.
