The invention relates to breaking-up and makeup of trains at railway stations. A car retarder of gravitational type contains a platform capable of being moved along the track rail on two guides and is made with a groove for spring-loaded thrust roller installed on the lever and connected to diverting profile surface through the servo roller. The profile surface is located on the guide nearest to the track rail, and on the second guide is installed a solenoid, which through the stock is connected to the shank of beam. The latter is located on the platform in contact with thrust roller with possibility of interaction of its profile support with the wheel of railroad car. It additionally contains a gravitational unit with weight, which is capable to be moved vertically along the guiding trunk and connected by means of flexible member to the platform, and the guiding plate located on the guide nearest to the track rail and connected through the lever to the stock of solenoid installed between the guides of platform. Technical result: guarantee of constant resistance force of railroad car at retarding.
