The thermal transfer roll is used for the manufacturing of laminated sheets. The transfer roll has a plurality of recesses formed in a surface thereof. This surface is covered by a thin metallic sleeve over a substantially enti re surface thereof. Alternatively, each recess can be closed by a cover body. While spaces in the recesses serve as heat resistance to form a similar he at transfer pattern to a conventional one, a surface of the roll is made flat t o prevent scratches from being produced on a laminate plate. This allows the thermal transfer roll to be free from scratches.
