The starter has an epicyclic gear (2) including planet gears (6, 7), a planet carrier (12) and a crown gear (9). The gear (2) is coupled or decoupled by the carrier connected to a crankshaft of a heat engine. A free wheel (17) allows the crown gear to rotate only in one rotation direction corresponding to that of the crankshaft. A spiral spring (4) stores and recovers energy. The spring rotates the planet carrier with respect to the crown gear when the spring (4) is relaxed. A blocking unit (21) e.g. brake, maintains the planet gear (7) immobile in rotation and releases it for its rotation.
