PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of detecting and acquiring information embedded in a documentthereby performing an appropriate image reading automatically without any function setup for the document. SOLUTION: An comprises: an image reading means 10 for reading images from a document 50 to obtain image data; an information reading means 11 for reading, from the document 50, additional information 51 added to the relevant document 50 to be read by said image reading means 10; and an operation control means 47 for judging whether image reading due to the image reading means 10 is to be performed on both sides of the document 50 or to be performed on one side of the document 50 on the basis of the additional information 51 read by the information reading means 11, and instructing the judgement to the image reading means 10.
