PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a black and white heat developable photosensitive material having low fogging and high image density, excellent in image tone, and excellent also in raw storage stability; and also to provide an image forming method. SOLUTION: The black and white heat developable photosensitive material has, on at least one surface of a support, an image forming layer containing at least a photosensitive silver halide, a fatty acid silver salt, a reducing agent for silver ions and a binder, wherein the black and white heat developable photosensitive material contains a compound represented by formula (I) (wherein R<SB>1</SB>-R<SB>4</SB>each independently represents H or a substituent substitutable on a benzene ring; and R<SB>5</SB>represents an alkyl group, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group) as the reducing agent, a coupler which reacts with the oxidation product of the above compound to form a dye, and a compound which reacts with the oxidation product of the above compound to form a product having substantially no absorption in the visible region.
