The actuator comprises electrode layers arranged between ceramic layers (33). A first part of the electrode layers is connected to a first electrode connection (31). The actuator is machined on an external surface provided for the electrode connection, after a sintering process for sintering at least the ceramic layers of the actuator. The actuator is not machined on at least one further outer surface (41,43), and has a sintered skin. The machining may involve grinding to form a flat surface for attachment to a corresponding part. Independent claims are included for a fuel injection valve, and for a method of manufacturing a piezoelectric actuator.
