An electric power steering system in which steering torque applied to a steering wheel is detected by a torque sensor, and an auxiliary steering torque generated from a motor in association with the detected steering torque is transmitted through a worm gear reduction mechanism to the output shaft of a steering mechanism, wherein core metal of the worm wheel in the worm gear reduction mechanism is fitted, on the inner diameter side thereof, to the output shaft and a part of the core metal is deformed plastically and secured to the output shaft, or a means for rocking relative rotation is provided on the side face at the fitting portion of the core metal and the output shaft.
