<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a back converter capable of realizing a protection circuit with a low-cost configuration to prevent breakage of a switching element used for the back converter. <P>SOLUTION: A microcomputer 14 detects a voltage VC1 of a capacitor C1. It turns on a switching element Q2 of a half bridge circuit 11 by way of a discharge control part 16 and a SW circuit 17, based on the detection result of voltage of the capacitor C1, before starting the half bridge circuit 11.
