The invention relates to nutrient media, particularly cell culture media, containing at least one substance selected among the group that comprises citric acid, succinic acid, malic acid, .alpha.-ketoglutaric acid, fumaric acid, oxaloacetic acid, isocitric acid, oxalosuccinic acid, tartaric acid, lactic acid, adipic acid, mixtures thereof, and salts, derivatives, or complexes of said acids. The invention also relates to the use of and methods for producing such cell culture media, methods for cultivating a cell culture in an inventive cell culture medium, and cells that can be obtained with the aid of such methods.
